Aussie talent on show in Sweepers
[Tue 09/02/2010 04:31:53]
Press release from Outback Films
Award winning director, Justin Davey, has teamed up with Australian talent, Geoffrey Caple and Craig Cochrane, for his latest film offering, Sweepers, a gritty ten-minute short film that spotlights the struggle of two Australian secret service agents to retrieve the Prime Minister's wayward daughter in the outskirts of Los Angeles.
Davey met the Australian pair after casting them in a beer commercial. The California-born director went on to win a
college and television Emmy in the commercial category, and followed that by signing with one of Canada's most
prestigious production companies, Avion Films.
After winning official selection at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival with his drama, The Room, Davey is hoping for similar success with Sweepers.
“It's a film that offers a lot. Roller-coaster action, life and death stakes, and complex characters you really invest in.
Getting to work with Australian actors up close has been an amazing experience. The level of talent is pretty scary,
not to mention the work ethic.”
Perth-born actor and Sweepers screenwriter, Geoffrey Caple, reveals the idea for Sweepers came from a latenight
conversation with friend and fellow actor, Craig Cochrane.
“We saw an opportunity to take advantage of the fact that we were Australian actors based in Los Angeles. The
characters and story that came to be were purely from us saying: we're Australians in America, and this is the dream
story we'd like to write and act in. And so we did.”
Adelaide-born, Craig Cochrane, adds, “We're very excited about going to festivals with Sweepers. The early
feedback we're getting is fantastic, and we'll be using the short film as a vehicle to raising finance for the feature.” Sweepers stars another Australian, in Melbourne-born, Georgia Van Cuylenburg, known for her work on Final
Fantasy XIII, and a regular on the L.A. comedy circuit.
Caple and Cochrane, served as producers on the film, along with Davey.
