Ben Lee wraps up Square score

[Fri 07/03/2008 03:17:33]

By Simon de Bruyn

Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee has returned to his darker musical roots to record the original soundtrack for The Square, which he wrapped recording in time for the film’s trailer to be cut and released online this week.

The film, from an original screenplay by actor Joel Edgerton and Matthew Dabner, tells the story of a man whose life unravels when his mistress brings him a suitcase full of cash, and stars Edgerton, Bill Hunter and Peter Phelps.

Joel’s brother Nash, who directed The Square after a string of award winning short films and music videos, told Inside Film that Lee’s songs will be used in addition to an orchestral score for the forthcoming thriller.

‘It’s a dark story and I wanted all the tracks to have the same voice. Ben and I have known each other for a long time and he’s worked on some of my short films so I wanted to work with someone who understood me and the way I made films,’ he said.

‘Ben started writing stuff when he read the script and I have shown him images and different cuts of the film along the way. We have talked about this film for a long time and have a good working relationship.’

Lee collaborated with Home & Away actor, and Sarah Blasko’s keyboard player, Jessica Chapnik, who performed vocals on the songs.

In other film soundtrack news, the producers of local horror Hobby Farm have secured former Jethro Tull keyboardist Andrew Giddings to write its score.
