After screening in London, Ireland, Copenhagen and Singapore, as well as enjoying a seven week theatrical run in its home town, Australian feature All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane has finally secured a short cinema release in Sydney.
The film will also be screening in Cinema des Antipodes as part of Cinephiles screenings during the Cannes International Film Festival. It also recently won best feature film at the London-Australian film festival.
Alston said it was difficult to secure a Sydney release from the film, despite its success overseas and locally. The film was the first ever screening at Melbourne’s ACMI to sell out online. In the end, the organisers booked the Chauvel cinema in Sydney themselves, with local distributor Accent Films not having enough clout to get it a theatre release.
“It’s a hard slog getting an independent Australian film screened in Sydney. The filmmakers have hired the Chauvel to satisfy requests coming from their growing underground fan base including thousands of MySpace friends,” she said.
Featuring Charlotte Gregg (Out of the Blue), Matt Zeremes (Holding the Man, Burke and Wills), Ryan Johnson (Out of the Blue), Gyton Grantley (Underbelly), All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane is a contemporary romantic comedy that tells the story of 25 year old Anthea, who is single and hates her job.
All My Friends is the debut feature for director Louise Alston and was written by her partner Stephen Vagg based on his own life experience of having a quarter life crisis and leaving Brisbane for
Sydney
. Many of the scenes were shot in the pair’s Brisbane home.
The filmmakers also secured a range of bands from Brisbane’s indie music scene for the soundtrack, as well as ex-Brisbane muso and former Custard front-man Dave McCormack singing a cover of The Go-Betweens’ hit ‘Streets of Your Town’.
The film will screen from Friday 9 May to Sunday 11 May at the Chauvel in Paddington.
