Bra Boys director Sunny Abberton has confirmed to Inside Film that the Russell Crowe directed feature adaptation of the successful documentary is set to begin production in July.

It was previously reported that Crowe, who narrated the Bra Boys doco, would make his directing debut with the feature. Brian Grazer will produce and Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie has been tapped to pen the screenplay.

Bra Boys recently opened on 23 screens in Hawaii, California and New York . In an email interview with Inside Film, Abberton said the project was still happening, and also revealed he had was developing further projects.

“I will be consulting with Russell Crowe and Brian Grazer on the feature which is to start production this July. I am also writing a story about a rebellion that happened in the early 1930's. Having reached audiences with my story telling I want to keep making movies that do the same,” he said.

He said he was amazed the film had travelled so far and connected with so many people.

“I just wanted to tell our story which I knew was powerful but wasn’t sure if people would relate. We really hoped it would empower kids who are growing up in similar circumstances and I think it really did. At first we planned to show it in local surf clubs and halls, and yeah it just grew and grew,” he said.

“I really didn’t know how American audiences would take an Australian doco, however I was hoping that people would get the social issues we show in the film such as race, class and family. I was hoping people would connect to these no matter where people where from and it looks like they have.”

The doco is being distributed internationally and in the USA by boutique distributor Berkela Films.
