Two Aussie shorts set for Cannes

[Mon 28/04/2008 01:56:48]

Oscar nominated filmmaker Anthony Lucas is on the road to Cannes again, after the short film he made with his two children in his backyard was accepted into the festival’s Shorts Competition as part of the Official Selection.

The film, My Rabit Hoppy, joins Jerrycan as the second short to make it into Official Competition. It is the first time in 10 years two Australian shorts have made it into the festival, according to Australian Film Commission chief executive Chris Fitchett.

It is the second time that Anthony Lucas has had a short film selected to screen at Cannes with Holding Your Breath screening in 2002. Lucas’ animation film The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello was nominated for an Oscar at the 78th Academy Awards.

My Rabit Hoppy tells the story of a school project about a pet rabbit that goes horribly wrong. In an endearing email to Inside Film, Lucas said the film was made entirely by the Lucas family in their own backyard.

“It stars Henry Lucas, age 7 ½, and Peggy Lucas, age 6. Half the film was shot by Henry. The children were produced by Julia Lucas who also supplied the donuts. Julia Lucas also occasionally played the rabbit,” he said.

“The film will have its Melbourne Premiere at the St Kilda Film Festival and then its world premiere at Cannes this coming May.”

Jerrycan was written and directed by Julius Avery, and tells the story of a kid who risks everything after he is bullied into making a life and death decision.

Avery was the recipient of the Emerging Australian Filmmaker Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2006 and the winner of the Australian Directors Guild Directors Award for Best Direction in a Student Film for End of Town in 2007.
