The Australian Indian Film Festival (AIFF) is now in its sixth year and has become one of the Indian film industry’s most prestigious events worldwide.
For 2008, AIFF are thrilled to unveil the most diverse programme of films in the history of the Festival. With the support of the Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of I & B and New Delhi, AIFF will present a series of superb regional films never before screened in Australia, plus the biggest Bollywood blockbusters of the past year, which serve to make this year’s programme a well rounded and true mirror of contemporary Indian cinema. AIFF is also extremely proud to include a retrospective of films from one of the world’s finest filmmakers, Satyajit Ray.
Sample a few of the festival highlights….
SATYAJIT RAY A RETROSPECTIVE
Satyajit Ray was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. His thirty or so films, which put India on the map of world cinema, include Apur Sansar, Devi, Ghare Baire, Jalsaghar and Pather Panchali. Beginning with Pather Panchali, released in 1955, Ray won almost every major prize. In 1992 Satyajit Ray was awarded a special Oscar award for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ in filmmaking from the Academy of Motion Pictures USA.
What makes Ray unparalleled in cinema is his versatility. No director was more personally responsible for his films than Ray. He wrote his scripts solo, and they were often original screenplays. He designed the sets and costumes down to the smallest details. He acted out the roles for his actors with consummate nuance. He operated the camera and he edited each frame. He composed the music, scoring it in a mixture of Western and Indian notation. He even designed the credits and posters, having earlier worked as a professional graphic designer and illustrator.
“Ray’s magic, the simple poetry of his images and their emotional impact will always stay with me.” Director Martin Scorsese
The Opening Night Film in both Sydney and Melbourne is the heart warming, critically acclaimed feature film Taare Zameen Par.
TAARE ZAMEEN PAR (Stars on Earth) directed by Aamir Khan
Ishaan Awasthi is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that are just not important in the world of adults. When he gets into far more trouble than his parents can handle, he is packed off to a boarding school to ‘be disciplined’.
“An inspirational story that is as emotive as it is entertaining: this is a little twinkling star of a movie.” BBC Movie Reviews
JAB WE MET directed by IMTIAZ ALI
Aditya (Shahid Kapoor), a defeated industrialist, is even more broken as the girl he loves is getting married. Disappointed, he aimlessly boards a train where he meets Geet (multi-award winning actress Kareena Kapoor) - a beautiful but annoyingly talkative girl who is leaving Mumbai to go her hometown from where she has plans of eloping with her boyfriend who lives in Manali.
“One of the finest romantic films to come out of Bollywood.” INDIAFM.COM
THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC (A little love, a little magic) directed by Kunal Kohli
'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic' is about people like you and me who wish for a little bit of magic in our lives, and don't realise the angels who bring it to us are right amongst us. Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is simply about all we need in our lives .....
“…Truly, the age of WHIZ KID in Indian cinema.” Times of India
