Cupid dances into Golden Reel awards

[Thu 12/02/2009 07:17:52]

By Simon de Bruyn

Cupid is one of three AFTRS short films to be nominated by the Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel awards to be held in Los Angeles on February 21.

The three AFTRS shorts, Cupid, fOUR and Street Angel, comprised half the best sound editing nominees in the student film category for the awards, which are considered to be the most prestigious peer-nominated sound awards in the world.

Produced by Trinni Franke and directed by Melvin J. Montalban, Cupid is a romantic comedy musical about what happens when the god of love decides to help hapless Roman but unexpectedly falls prey to his own magic and ends up pursuing the same girl, aided by all his divine powers.

The team of nominees for Cupid includes sound editor Jason King, composer and music editor Vicki Hansen, foley artist Roger Middenway and field recordist Auryn Lacey.

Franke said the nomination was a win for the whole team who brought the script to life.

“The team ran with what was a challenging idea on paper and made it awesome. The sound team really brought the film to life and made it more than I expected,” she said.

The sound team on Baz Luhrmann's Australia also received a nomination, for best sound editing: sound effects, foley, dialogue and ADR in a foreign feature film.
