After years in the making Adam Elliot has drawn back the curtain to reveal his first feature animation. With long time collaborator Melanie Coombs by his side, the writer and director unveils his dystopian vision to Zona Marie Tan.
Adam Elliot didn’t enjoy himself at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It had been five years since he and producer Melanie Coombs had won an Oscar for animated short Harvey Krumpet, and their first claymation feature, Mary and Max, was about to have its premiere.
“It would have been far more enjoyable had we gone as short filmmakers or as people going to watch films, or people whose film wasn’t opening night. We soon realised that all the attention was on us. There was so much hype, so much buzz, so much expectation.
“And my job as director was to say ‘it’s just a film. It’s not perfect. It’s got flaws just like all films.”
Still, Mary and Max in no way disappoints fans loyal and familiar with Adam’s visual style and irreverent humour, even as it touches on suicide, Asperger’s syndrome, depression, divorce and alcoholism.
