Cover story: Beautiful Kate

[Tue 07/07/2009 02:32:37]

It has been a long journey for Rachel Ward to make her feature film directorial debut. Brendan Swift unravels the stormy mix of emotions she has unearthed in Beautiful Kate.

Incest, sex and death are not the typical subject matters of a feature film. But then Beautiful Kate is no ordinary debut. Rachel Ward has unapologetically twisted an unconventional murder-mystery onto a familial hotbed that extracts romance and repulsion from its audience in equal measures.

“I’m not going to make a film where people fall asleep,” Ward says.

“You hope at the end the journey … all the emotions kind of settle and it becomes an all round satisfying experience. But you do want to jolt and shock and move and excite and disturb and shake and god, that’s what you want to do as a fi lmmaker.”

Her big-budget outback epic does not disappoint on that front, traversing the dangerous territory of an illicit romance between an adolescent brother and sister that takes its visual cues from the work of controversial photographer Bill Henson.

It tells the story of writer Ned Kendall (Ben Mendelsohn), who returns to his isolated family home to say goodbye to his dying father, Bruce (Ward’s husband and business partner Bryan Brown). However, the trip reawakens Ned’s memories of his deceased twin sister Kate (Sophie Lowe) and their relationship’s journey into intimate territory. The affair ends in tragedy when Kate dies in a car accident and Ned must come to terms with both his sister’s death and his troubled relationship with his father.

“The response I’ve had so far is ‘Yes, very controversial but sensitively handled’,” Ward says. “This is a mystery and a love story really and it’s hard to find – everything is permissible these days. Where do you find two lovers that cannot be put together?

“So one has to scrape the barrel. One has to find fairly extreme cases. And I think there will be a degree of uncomfortableness and people saying ‘I don’t want to go there’. But I dare say that those who dare to go will not be too traumatised by the experience.”
