Feature: Cedar Boys

[Tue 04/08/2009 02:46:22]

Cedar Boys is an ambitious genre fIlm that explores crime and culture in Sydney. INSIDEFILM takes a walk on the dark side.

On the verge of taking his AFTRS short film Bound to the NYU International Student Film Festival in 2001, Serhat Caradee sat down to watch Mean Streets, Goodfellas and other films about New York’s underbelly.

It was only later, while talking to international filmmakers in the Big Apple, that he realised there were few Australian films tapping the same current, spurring him to make his own urban tale about the textural underside of Sydney. With Lebanese crime dominating the media when he got back, he decided to explore this cultural milieu and how outsiders choose crime in order to change their situation.

“One of the main things I want to say about this film is why do young Lebanese boys fall into crime; how they fall into crime and why they choose crime. They are the three main messages I want to get out,” he says.

“The story is about these three young boys who come across an opportunity; they take a risk, and they pay the consequences. That’s the main story. Through that there are all these other messages that come out: being outsiders and seeing how Sydney’s west comes to the east.”

Caradee is speaking to INSIDEFILM on the set of Cedar Boys. It is July 2008, midway through the ambitious shoot: the lean $1.36 million production is ambitiously trying to race through 30 locations in 26 days. We are currently sitting in the closed Grand Pacific Blue Room bar on busy Oxford St, where the film has set up a temporary home to shoot key scenes where the central Lebanese character Tarek (Les Chantery) meets a girl from the eastern suburbs, Amy (Rachael Taylor), which fuels his ambitions to fit into the affluent and glamourous eastern Sydney crowd.

“My mate used to run this club from 1999 to about 2002, and I was an outsider here,” Caradee muses. “It was a really cool bar to hang out for eastern suburbs people and it’s funny that we’re back here shooting our bar scenes in July 2008.”
