Box Office: Lou hits $44K

Australian drama Lou has continued its subdued box office performance after posting a 60 per cent drop in its second weekend at cinemas.

The film, which stars renowned actor John Hurt as an Alzheimer-afflicted grandfather who mistakes his granddaughter for his wife, grossed $10,960 across 13 screens over the weekend. It has now taken $44,803 in total. The film is being distributed by SA-based Kojo Pictures.

Among other Australian films, crime saga Animal Kingdom continued its strong run in its fourth weekend. It posted a 20 per cent drop after taking $427,629 to now hit $3,164,633.

Director, David Michôd, producer Liz Watts, and cast have been promoting the film in the US, including at last month's LA Film Festival, ahead of its US release on August 13.

The film has also been sold to several overseas territories including the United Kingdom (Optimum Releasing), France (ARP Selection) and Italy (Mikado Films).

Meanwhile, Australian comedy The Kings of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2 took another $27,439 in its sixth week across 25 screens. It has now grossed just over $4.85 million.

In other box office news, Toy Story 3 debuted in first place after grossing almost $7.41 million across 480 screens. It also posted the highest screen average among the top 20 films over the weekend with $15,434.

Shrek Forever After was second on the overall top box office list after taking almost $2.79 million in its second week across 450 screens while comedy Grown Ups debuted with $2.76 million across 228 screens.
