Tomorrow, When The War Began almost at $9m

Local action film Tomorrow, When The War Began had a 40 per cent drop in its third week at the local box office while New Zealand hit Boy continued to do well.

The Stuart Beattie blockbuster, this year’s biggest Australian movie, has now taken $8,969,427 Down Under and $NZ1,023,100 in New Zealand.

It’s weekend tally of $1.2 million gave it a screen average of $3841 (across 322 screens) – down from last weekend’s $6118 (339 screens).

The $27 million (est) film is the directorial debut of Hollywood screenwriter Beattie (Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean) and was produced by Omnilab Media's production arm Ambience Entertainment.

The top film over the weekend was M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, which took $2.7 million across 331 screens in its opening weekend.

Animation flick Despicable Me was in second place, making $2.2 million – a 30 per cent drop on its opening weekend.

Boy, directed by Taika Waititi and now New Zealand's number one film of all time, made $153,229 bringing its total tally to $1,233,482 Down Under.

Shirley Barrett’s South Solitary is still hanging in there, making $7753 on the weekend across 10 screens in its eighth week.

Aussie crime thriller Animal Kingdom opened in New Zealand on the weekend and made $NZ34,139 across 12 screens at an average of $NZ2844 while in the US, it made $US53,720 (57 screens) in its sixth week giving it a total of $US817,134.

Furthermore, Mao’s Last Dancer has made $US2.6 million at the US box office since opening on August 20.
