SPAA Fringe set to impress

Budding screen content makers should attend the SPAA Fringe conference yearly due to an ever-changing industry Down Under, conference manager Deb McBride says.
“…This landscape is changing so much – even those at the coalface of the digital landscape say they don’t know what’s going on,” she told INSIDEFILM ahead of the two-day conference.
“It’s moving so quickly that I think it’s important to attend every year because things are changing within the industry.
“It may look like the same people, the same kind of topics but the very nature of the landscape is changing so much that those same people are talking about different things because we have to.
“I think there is only so much you can figure out on your own about this industry.”
She said as a whole, it was a collaborative industry.
“It’s very important to see it as a collaborative industry and it’s inspiring to meet up with people who could be collaborators or colleagues in the industry.”
The Fringe conference, which started in 1999, is aimed at giving every-day screen buffs access to industry professionals.
This year’s program is no different.
Held in Sydney, the conference will be packed with workshops, roundtable discussions, one-on-one meetings, panel discussions and networking events – not to mention the Screen Development Australia (SDA) Pitching competition and screenings of the DigiSPAA finalist films.
“[The conference] certainly expands your knowledge, even if you think you know everything,” McBride said.
”It gives you a really good snapshot view of the industry and how it operates.”
Speakers this year include Animal Kingdom director and former INSIDEFILM editor David Michôd, Blame producers Melissa Kelly and Ryan Hodgson, SPAA Fringe patron Peter Broderick, The Project Factory’s Jennifer Wilson, Present Pictures’ Cora Olson and Engine creative director Simon Robson.
The 12th annual Screen Producers Association of Australia Fringe Conference will be held tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at the Powerhouse Museum.
Registration tickets for the conference can be purchased on the day.
