Quickflix subscribers pass 80,000

[Mon 17/01/2011 01:49:12]

By Rachael Gavin

Online DVD rental and movie subscription company Quickflix has reached a milestone of 80,000 subscribers, helping it to post an annual revenue of more than $10 million for the first time.

A steady influx of new subscribers signed up during the December 2010 quarter and similar growth rates are expected this year. The company said total subscribers reached 77,528 at the end of last year, which was up 89 per cent year-on-year and 29 per cent in the quarter.

“These results are extremely pleasing. We ended the calendar year in a solid position, bolstered by solid subscriber growth,” executive chairman Stephen Langsford said in a statement today.

“We’re already seeing healthy subscriber acquisition continuing into January, with paying subscribers exceeding 53,000 and total subscribers (including trialists) surpassing 80,000.”

“The strong uplift in new subscribers joining Quickflix is expected to result in further significant revenue growth in the March 2011 quarter and beyond.”

Online and kiosk DVD rentals may have seen a rise in popularity, but it seems most of us still prefer to walk into a traditional video shop to rent movies.

According to a Choice study, 75 per cent of people surveyed continue to hire films from a walk-in video store although 18 per cent now subscribe to online and mail rental programs.

Why On-line DVD Rental is Great Value Entertainment On-line DVD rental is cheap – as low as $2 per movie. I can choose the plan that suits my budget. My selections are delivered to my mail box at home or post office. I watch them when it suits me; I am in total of my entertainment. I can watch a DVD as many times as I like. If I miss something I can rewind. I can press the pause button if the phone rings. There are no due dates for return so I am not under pressure to meet a deadline. There are no late return penalties. Returning the DVDs does not cost me anything as envelopes and postage are all FREE. Walking to the neared posting box gives me exercise and keeps me fit. The DVDs are of good quality – they are clean and play most of the times. Getting a replacement is hassle-free and at no cost should a DVD turn out to be faulty. This is rarely the case. Most DVDs have subtitles and I can read these if I choose to. Not driving to DVD store means • I save on fuel • There is less maintenance on my car • I am not affected by traffic jams • I reduce risk of accidents, traffic fines etc. • I contribute to a greener environment • I save myself a valuable resource; time • There is more money in my pocket for other luxuries I no longer have to wait in a queue if the DVD store is busy or have reduced staff. I avoid disappointments if the movie I want to watch is not available in store. On-line DVD rental is a luxury I can afford. It is the way of the future.
