Terra Nova set to resume Qld shoot in June

[Wed 16/02/2011 01:37:48]

By Brendan Swift

US TV series Terra Nova is set to resume filming in Queensland in June despite the sharp rise in the Australian dollar since the shoot began in 2010.

There are no plans to move the big-budget Fox series, which is set in prehistoric Earth, to a cheaper location, according to a spokesman.

“The show resumes production in Queensland this [northern] summer with no plans to move the production elsewhere,” a Fox spokesman said via email.

The Australian dollar is now trading above $US1 compared to US88.77c when the initial public announcement that Queensland had secured the production was made on August 20 last year.

The spokesman said Fox had committed to film all 13 episodes in Australia – rather than just the initial six episodes. Two episodes have been filmed so far with the remainder set to begin shooting this June.

A promo for the series was recently shown during the Super Bowl broadcast in the US.

A spokeswoman for government and industry lobby group Ausfilm said it believed that production on Terra Nova was going very well.

However, “concerns remain that the consistently high Australian dollar could affect this series and continue to affect the possibility of other series moving forward”.

Ausfilm, which promotes Australia as a shooting location for international productions, is lobbying the government to double the current 15 per cent location rebate or peg it to moves in the Australian dollar.
