Peter Weir's The Way Back posts moderate opening weekend at local box office

Peter Weir’s latest survival thriller The Way Back has posted a moderate opening weekend of just $346,129, while local audiences instead backed Walt Disney Studios' latest offerings.
The $29 million epic World War II drama, starring Ed Harris and Colin Farrell, posted a screen average of $2704, across its 128 screens.
According to Box Office Mojo, the Roadshow film – Weir’s return since 2003’s Master And Commander – had a similar tale in the US, making $1.2 million in its opening weekend across 678 screens, with an average of $1798.
Audiences instead flocked to teen sci-fi film I Am Number Four, which made $2.2 million in its first weekend, as well as Gnomeo and Juliet which raked in a further $1.5 million in its second week.
Liam Neeson’s brainy action-packed thriller Unknown came in at third spot, taking a further $1.1 million across 200 screens, giving it a total of $3.4 million from two weeks.
The talk of the town – The King’s Speech – which won yesterday’s Best Movie Oscar at the Academy Awards, raked in another million, making its total an impressive $25.7 million Down Under after 10 weeks.
Universal’s Sanctum, backed by Hollywood legend James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic, Aliens, Terminator), took in a further $85,006 across 94 screens. It has now made almost $4 million at the local box office.
