Dark fantasy flick Red Riding Hood delivered big numbers for distributor Warner Bros in its opening weekend in Australia, taking in $1.7 million.
Based on the famous folktale, the film – directed by Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke – was seen on 204 local screens, giving it a healthy screen average of $8547.
Shot by Melbourne cinematographer Mandy Walker (Australia), the romantic thriller – which follows beautiful young woman Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) who is torn between two men – has had largely negative reviews.
Johnny Depp animated movie Rango, distributed by Paramount, took second place after three weeks, making $1.5 million across 296 screens, while Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), made $1.3 million in its second weekend.
As far as Aussie films go, Griff The Invisible made $44,261 in its second weekend across 18 screens. This gives it a screen average of $2459 – down on last weekend’s average of $3317.
The Paramount/Transmission film, directed by Leon Ford, stars Ryan Kwanten and Maeve Dermody.
Andrew Traucki’s latest survival thriller The Reef was down 51 per cent on its opening weekend, despite positive reviews.
The film made $28,437 on the weekend across 38 screens, giving it a screen average of $748, bringing its total to $106,123.
A Heartbeat Away, made for $7 million by acclaimed theatre director Gale Edwards, also had a slip, taking in $22,854 from 72 screens, giving it a screen average of just $317.
Films opening this week include The Lincoln Lawyer (Matthew McConaughey) and Just Go With It (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston).
