Innovation key priority for Screen Tasmania: Report
[Mon 11/04/2011 01:35:05]
By Sam Dallas
Innovation is a key priority area for Screen Tasmania in the next five years, a new report shows.
The state agency’s consultation draft of its five-year Strategic Plan, undertaken by The Nous Group, was released on Friday. The analysis focuses on key areas of importance and ways to continue building on their current strengths.
The first of its kind for Screen Tasmania, the report says a shift from “the model of a traditional funding body” was needed and they needed to embrace innovative ways to add value and support to the screen industry.
“Tasmania will have a niche in the worldwide marketplace, as a centre for the creation of quality screen content, using innovative methods of production and delivery,” the report states.
It says this will be done through producing content designed for digital platforms, hosting a number of digital forums and networking functions, taking advantage of the National Broadband Network and increasing the development support for animation, TV and factual entertainment.
The report also says a broader range of content was needed if the state’s industry was to remain sustainable.
“Tasmania will offer a business-enabling environment that provides competitive opportunities for growth in the screen industry," it says.
Other objectives of Screen Tasmania, which was established just over a decade ago, include raising the state’s profile interstate and overseas and operating more “transparently and effectively” in relation to key stakeholders and the public interest – which includes the launch of a new website and more social networking.
The report follows the recent board appointments of chairman Brian Rosen, who took over from Margaret Reynolds, and board members Posie Graeme-Evans and Simon Nasht.
It's exciting times for the "Apple Isle" with psychological thriller The Hunter, starring Hollywood actor Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man), currently set for an October release through Madman. It was filmed throughout Tasmania late last year.
Also released on Friday for industry comment was the agency’s program outlines.
