Phillip Noyce to direct remake of Van Damme's Bloodsport

[Wed 18/05/2011 12:51:23]

By Sam Dallas

Australian director Phillip Noyce is set to direct a remake of iconic Jean-Claude Van Damme action movie Bloodsport.

Noyce, whose last project Salt made an estimated $US293 worldwide, has signed on for the “reinvention”, based on the popular 1988 martial arts film, it was reported at Cannes.

No details on who will step into Van Damme’s big shoes have been announced.

Taken writer Robert Mark Kamen will pen the script, while veteran producer Ed Pressman (The Crow, American Psycho) and Alberto Lensi will undertake producing duties. Mark DiSalle – who produced the original – is executive producing.

The story will follow an American who gets involved in a martial arts contest in Brazil after recovering from violence he experienced in Afghanistan.

Noyce is currently attached to direct a number of feature films – one of which is action flick Hunter Killer, which follows an American submarine commander who joins a Navy Seal team to rescue the Russian president. The Rabbit-Proof Fence and Patriot Games filmmaker has recently finished directing an episode of HBO’s new series Luck.

IF contacted Noyce however no further comment was made.

This is the most exciting news I've had since I found out about nintendo at 11 years old, which is how Old I was when this film and the Nitendo nes came out. I used to watch this movie on VHS every week end whilst trying to do the splits between two arm-chairs. Then I'd relax and play Super Mario Brothers. www.nickbritton.com.au
