Final Harry Potter film continues to break records

[Fri 22/07/2011 11:33:42]

By Sam Dallas

The final Harry Potter film has cast a spell over Australian cinemagoers, and has broken yet another record.

After posting the biggest box office opening day in history after opening on July 13, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has gone on to break the record for the biggest opening week locally, taking in $29.3 million, according to MPDAA.

The previous record was set by 2009’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which made more than $22 million in its opening week across 485 screens.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part 2 is the first film in the franchise to be shown in 3D (after being converted in post-production) and opened on a record 754 screens (in both 3D and 2D). According to Box Office Mojo, the epic 3D Warner Bros fantasy has made almost $US215 million just in North America alone.

Harry Potter, based on the novels by British author J.K. Rowling, has now edged out George Lucas' Star Wars to become the top-grossing franchise of all time.

The latest and final film is a battle of good and evil as Harry faces Voldemort for the final time. Part One posted the ninth biggest opening week of all time last November, making just over $19 million, before going on to make $42 million.
