Snowtown and The Tall Man selected for Toronto

[Thu 04/08/2011 11:41:38]

By Amanda Diaz

Controversial thriller Snowtown and documentary The Tall Man  are set to join the Australian line up for the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Snowtown - the true story of a teenage boy who befriends a serial killer - will screen in the festival's Vanguard program, which seeks to show provocative films with unconventional styles, genres and structures.

The Tall Man, which is based on Chloe Hooper's award-winning book of the same name, tells of Cameron Doomadgee's death in custody in 2004 on Palm Island.

The documentary will have its international premiere in the festival's Real to Reel program, with the film set for an Australian release in October.

“I’m immensely proud that the film raises the profile in some small way of the struggle for justice faced by Indigenous Australians in 2011," said producer Darren Dale in a statement.

The Tall Man and Snowtown join three other Australian films screening at Toronto. Fred Schepisi's The Eye of the Storm, Jonathan Teplitzky's Burning Man and Daniel Nettheim's The Hunter (based on the novel by Sleeping Beauty director Julia Leigh) will be shown in the Special Presentations program.

The Toronto International Film Festival is often recognized as the most important film festival in the world after Cannes.

Last year's lineup featured The King's Speech, which later went on to win a Best Picture Oscar for producer Emile Sherman, and Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which secured a Best Actress Oscar for Natalie Portman.

The 36th Toronto Film Festival will take place from September 8 -18.
