Four new companies join Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative

[Tue 06/09/2011 04:08:21]

By Brendan Swift

Another four companies have backed a new initiative which will allow viewers to watch 3D content on home screens made by different manufacturers while using the same glasses.

Royal Philips Electronics, Sharp, TCL and Toshiba are set to join the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative, which was launched by Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and XPAND last month.

The new technology standard will create a Bluetooth-enabled radio frequency system that will link 3D active shutter glasses technology and 3D displays made by different manufacturers.

Manufacturers are expected to begin developing and releasing compliant products later this month, before the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative begins certifying compliant products later this year, according to an announcement.

LG, the world's second-biggest maker of televisions, is not part of the initiative – it uses passive 3D viewing technology. However, the company this week said it expects to lift its global 3D TV market share to 20 per cent by the end of this year, up from just 4 per cent a year ago.
