Baz Luhrmann sings praises of RED cameras from the set of The Great Gatsby

[Wed 02/11/2011 10:33:43]

By Brendan Swift

Baz Luhrmann has thrown his support behind RED cameras as shooting continues on the director's first digital 3D feature film, The Great Gatsby.

The filmmaker said he is "now a member of the RED army" after spending the past two months shooting the film with Panavision-supplied RED EPIC cameras and 3ality rigs.

"It is true that the revolution started some time ago and I was late coming to digital, through the door of 3D," Luhrmann said in a note to RED president Jarred Land.

"But nothing could have prepared me for how tremendous not only the visual results have been on the RED, but also how free of any technical hold-up our creative journey has been. Of course, I have a bit of a thing for big ideas and strong vision myself, and it is clear to me that these are at the heart of all things RED."

Cinematographer Simon Duggan ACS has previously said the film will be shot at 5K resolution to allow blowups and visual effects.

Several RED EPICs are now available in Australia although The Great Gatsby, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, is the first major local film to use them.

The RED EPICS have already been used on a number of upcoming big-budget 3D films such as Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, James Cameron's sequel to Avatar, The Amazing Spider-Man and Ridley Scott's Prometheus (which is also being worked on by Australia's Fuel VFX).
