AACTA announces nominations for inaugural awards

[Wed 30/11/2011 02:54:59]

By Amanda Diaz

Psychological thriller The Hunter and Fred Schepisi's The Eye of the Storm have received the most nominations for the inaugural Samsung AACTA Awards.

The Hunter  picked up 14 nominations, across a number of categories including best film and best adapted screenplay, while The Eye of the Storm received 12 nods.

The nominations were announced in Sydney today, in a ceremony hosted by Oscar-winning animator, Adam Elliot.

This year's awards include 47 categories, across both film and television.

Justin Kurzel's Snowtown scored ten nominations including nods for best cinematography and best actor. Following closely behind, crowd-pleaser Red Dog  was recognised in eight categories.

ABC series The Slap and Showtime's cloudstreet  picked up eight nominations each.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts was launched by the Australian Film Institute in August.

Cinematographer Don McAlpine ACS ASC, who will receive the AACTA Raymond Longford Award at a luncheon on January 15, said he supported the AFI establishing AACTA.

"I sense this is a re-birth and I just hope it becomes more industry-oriented and I think it is," he said.

The 2011 awards will be held at the Sydney Opera House on January 31, after being secured by the New South Wales government in early 2010. It will be the first time the ceremony has been staged in Sydney since 2000.

The move from December to January has been scheduled in order to allow the inclusion of more 2011 projects, as well as bringing the AACTA awards into the international awards season, similar to the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
