Flickerfest hits Brisbane

[Wed 08/02/2012 10:15:33]

Press release from Flickerfest

Flickerfest, Australia’s leading short film festival, will now bring the best of Australian and International short films to the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art in Brisbane from Thurs 9th- Sat 11th Feb, this weekend on its 37 venue national tour.

Flickerfest is thrilled to include in our Opening Night, on Thursday 9th Feb, the Best of Australian programme in Brisbane, ‘Gus’ wr/dir Andrew Martin, an animated short film made in Queensland, about not giving up on people, especially those you care most about.... A ‘cave’ boy with disruptive flatulence and his father live a cold life in the Alps until the boy is sent outside and changes life forever. ‘Gus’ was made through Andrew’s company Honeydew Studios, and we’re delighted that he’ll be in Brisbane on Thursday night to introduce his film. The programme will be followed with drinks and delicious refreshments.

Another Queensland filmmaker screening in Best of Australian is ‘After the Credits’ wr/dir Josh Lawson. This hilarous comedy captures the moments after the ‘Hollywood’ happy ending, and has screened with great success internationally, winning the LA Shorts Award in 2011 for Best Comedy, and nominated for an Australian Writer’s Guild Awards 2011 for Best Original Screenplay.

This programme will be followed on Friday 10th March with Best of International 1, which includes ’Raju’ a heartfelt drama from Germany which had its Australian premiere at Flickerfest in official international selection before its recent Academy ®Award 2012 Nomination. Flickerfest Special International Jury Award winner ‘Opasatica’ wr/dir Erin Morin is another highlight of the Brisbane screening. French-Canadian short ‘Opasatica’ had it’s Australian Premiere at Flickerfest 2012, our acclaimed International Jury noted, “Opastica was a great cinema poem that evoked the feelings and frissons of a love affair in six brief episodes with great visual panache and charismatic performances.” The programme also features ‘Ebony Society’ from NZ wr/dir Tammy Davis, winner of our ING DIRECT Best Short Award at Flickerfest 2012. ‘Ebony Society’ a gorgeous film centred on friendship, on one night out stealing two boys break into a house and find themselves confronted with an unexpected situation that will test their friendship and force the boys to consider another way.

Flickerfest will finish up in Brisbane on Saturday 11th March with Best of International 2, a fantastic programme which features ‘Steve’ about a man who comes to tea, and won’t leave, starring Colin Firth and Keira Knightly, Cannes Special Jury 2011 winning short ‘Swimsuit 46’ from Belgium, and the hilariously off-beat and irreverent animation, ‘Las Palmas’ from Sweden, which won Flickerfest’s SAE Institute Award for Best Use of Digital Technology at Flickerfest 2012.
