Engine creates titles and content for TEDxSydney 2012

[Mon 28/05/2012 11:50:50]

Press release from Engine

Last weekend saw TEDxSydney 2012, the independently organised TED event, back at Carriageworks with Engine invited to create the opening titles and two pieces of unique content for the event.

The TEDxSydney 2012 titles and Engine’s short interstitial film Monday Disappear were the brainchildren of Engine CD Simon Robson who said, “This was an excellent project to work on and we are very proud of the results. The titles Live. Real. Now. illustrate the possibility of live situations using dancers, body paint, projections, a split screen grid and a whole lot of fun. They are about typography, high energy and momentum.”

The titles not only opened TEDxSydney 2012 but were also shown as cut downs throughout the weekend event.

Robson and the Engine team also created Monday Disappear a Brett Easton Ellis novel-inspired ambient short film that uses colour, form and movement to take the viewer to another land.

Robson commented, “TEDxSydney 2012 wanted a “video sorbet” or “visual palette cleanser” to show in between presentations. The brief was open which, when you think like I do, means anything can happen. I recently read Lunar Park by Brett Easton Ellis and wanted to re-create his eerie sub plot about people going missing to strange lands. Like I said, an open brief. So, with the interest of several talented young dancers, we shot them engaging and disengaging with life through clouds of smoke and coloured chalk before they disappear into

The short film is quite the assault on the senses with intense slow motion underscored by a unique soundtrack created by Antfood USA – the coolest
music creators on the planet according to Robson.

He continued, “Antfood’s music is amazing. So deep, with no highs and no lows. One tone - to match the film. Quite honestly we made an unapologetically ambient film that is a counterpoint to the visual noise one finds so much of in

The final Engine piece shown at TEDxSydney 2012 was a behind-the-scenes collaboration created during the production of their recent Mount Franklin Easy Crush Bottle 30-second TVC.

Engine EP Adam Wells said, “When we were initially approached by TEDxSydney 2012 they said the main reason they were interested in Engine
contributing to the event was our 360-degree creative and production model. They started by asking us for the “video sorbet” but after seeing it then asked us to create the titles for the event and if they could also show the Mount Franklin Easy Crush Bottle TVC behind-the-scenes. We were delighted to have been asked. TEDx has consistently high standards and is exceptionally well curated.

This was not only an honour but a great compliment for Engine as we were the main content creators for such a unique organisation, sitting alongside some of the industry’s true heavyweights at the event including Clemenger Sydney, Droga 5, BMF, Amnesia Razorfish and more.”
