The Sapphires reaches $9.56m at the box office

[Mon 03/09/2012 05:09:13]

By Brendan Swift

Feel-good comedy The Sapphires has reached $9.56 million at the Australian box office after another solid weekend at cinemas.

The film grossed $1.14 million in its fourth weekend – a drop of 21 per cent on the previous weekend. It was shown on 279 screens giving it a screen average of $4109.

Earlier this week, The Sapphires became the highest grossing Australian film of 2012 after surpassing Happy Feet Two (although that film's tally is still higher if its 2011 box office is also included). The Sapphires is now the 25th highest grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) after passing 1983 hit Phar Lap.

It is currently ranked fourth among all mainstream releases behind The Expendables 2, which grossed $2.96 million in its opening weekend, The Bourne Legacy ($1.27 million in its third weekend) and Total Recall ($1.16 million in its second weekend). The top five was rounded out by Hope Springs ($868,207 in its second weekend).

Among other Australian films, feature documentary Storm Surfers 3D continues to expand its cinematic run. It added 12 screens, taking it to 18 in total, which helped it post a modest 7 per cent box office increase to $73,216.
