Kath & Kimderella reaches $3.89m at local box office

Australian comedy Kath & Kimderella has grossed another $1.09 million at the box office in its second weekend at cinemas.
The film, which has now reached $3.89 million in total, was shown across 285 screens giving it an average of $3842 per screen. The 45 per cent drop on its opening weekend suggests the film will finish up its run around the same mark as local comedy A Few Best Men ($5.63 million) rather than push the word-of-mouth driven The Sapphires, which continues to play to audiences.
The feel-good movie about four indigenous singers grossed another $685,760 across 255 screens this weekend, giving it a screen average of $2689. That result was a drop of just 25 per cent in its sixth weekend at cinemas. The Sapphires has now taken almost $12 million at the box office.
Local documentary Storm Surfers 3D took another $21,400 in its sixth weekend, pushing the film to $465,129 in total. The feature documentary has now secured a place among the locally-produced top ten documentaries of all time (not adjusted for inflation) after passing 1978 release, ABC of Love and Sex Australia Style.
This week will also see the release of Paramount Pictures shark-thriller Bait 3D (on more than 200 screens) and war drama Lore. Another mainstream local release, Mental, starring Toni Collette, will be released on October 4 by Universal Pictures on more than 200 screens.
