Beverley McGarvey appointed Network Ten chief programming officer

By Brendan Swift

Struggling broadcaster Network Ten has made acting chief programming officer Beverley McGarvey's position permanent.

McGarvey has been acting chief programming officer since August 24. Network Ten chief executive James Warburton, said she was an outstanding television executive. "Her creativity, strategic thinking and programming and scheduling skills will be invaluable in the renewal of our creative content," he said in a statement.

McGarvey joined Network Ten as network head of programming in 2006 from TV3 in New Zealand, where she was director of programming for two years. Before TV3, she spent four years as head of program scheduling and promotions for TV3 Ireland.

A turnaround in Ten's programming slate remains crucial for the company after it posted an annual net loss of $12.9 million in fiscal 2012.

Deutsche Bank analysts estimate that if its core channel ratings climbed just 1 per cent in fiscal 2013 (and all other inputs remained unchanged), then TV sales would increase 4 per cent to $740 million and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) would increase by about 50 per cent to $85 million.

Ten will announce its new programming slate this week. Meanwhile, head of program research David Castran has also left the company.
