Emily Blatchford appointed IF Magazine editor

[Wed 07/11/2012 12:29:26]

Emily Blatchford has been appointed IF Magazine editor.

She takes the reins from Brendan Swift, who has led the magazine for almost four years. He will continue at IF Magazine in the new position of editor-at-large, which will allow him to focus purely on journalism.

Blatchford, a graduate of University of Technology, Sydney, was most recently a digital photojournalist/acting chief of staff with The Gladstone Observer in Queensland. In this role, she sourced, delegated and wrote numerous feature articles, as well as coordinated weekly lift out sections, including entertainment, easy eating, fashion, nightlife and Weekend. She also oversaw the publication of the monthly CQ Industry magazine.

"I've always been a massive fan of Inside Film and am extremely excited to take on the role of editor,” she said. “I look forward to working with Brendan and the rest of the team to develop, create and continue to produce the high quality publication that is Inside Film."

Swift, a former journalist at the Australian Financial Review and Australian Associated Press, was appointed IF Magazine editor in January 2009. During that time, which included a shift in print publishing frequency to bi-monthly, the magazine’s paid circulation has lifted by more than 21 per cent.

He has also overseen a substantial lift in traffic to IF.com.au, with the number of unique visitors increasing by more than 50 per cent and page views by more than 40 per cent. He has broken a number of notable stories in the screen industry including the collapse of the Josh Hartnett film Singularity, the closure of George Miller's Dr D Studios, and Warner Bros decision to switch the Green Lantern shoot location from Australia to the US in an attempt to reduce costs.

“My passion has always been for journalism and now is the ideal time to hand the editor role to someone new. I’m sure Emily will bring a fresh perspective to the role and continue the magazine’s growth with an ongoing focus on delivering quality content to readers.”

IF Magazine is still searching for a technical writer.

Blatchford joins Intermedia on November 12 and will attend the SPAA Conference in Melbourne with Swift.
