The Hobbit breaks box office records on Boxing Day

[Fri 04/01/2013 11:05:15]

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has stormed the Australian box office with a record-breaking opening of $5.913 million – the largest ever Boxing Day release in motion picture history.

It wasn’t only a big day for The Hobbit but for the Australian box office in general, with the top ten movies alone generating over A$10.8M. Just under one million people attended cinemas across the country.

Other films that raked in the big bucks were Les Miserables, which opened at number two with $1.820m, and Wreck it Ralph with $1.145 million.

Boxing Day 2012 has proven to be Australia’s third largest opening of all time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two ($7.09 million on 727 screens) and The Avengers ($6.004 million on 621 screens) and is the biggest opening day result without midnight screenings.

The Hobbit has continued to rake in the impressive figures since, with a total box office earning of $21 031 327 so far. Les Miserables remains in second place with a total of $10 512 167, followed by Wreck It Ralph with $8 621 915.
