Creatives Converge to Talk at Tropfest Roughcut

[Fri 25/01/2013 01:24:44]

Press Release from Tropfest Roughcut

Tropfest today announced that high profile Australian actors Rebecca Gibney, Gyton Grantley and Magda Szubanski will join an exciting line up of film industry insiders at Tropfest Roughcut on Saturday 16th February.

Hosted by Rob Carlton, the curated program will explore the idea of collaboration as the key to creativity. Each session will focus on a different aspect of the filmmaking process.

Australian film writer and director Jonathan Teplitzky, whose 2012 film Burning Man is up for three AACTA nominations including Best Film this year, will discuss how great direction meets inventive composition with acclaimed composer, David Hirschfelder (Shine, Elizabeth, Strictly Ballroom).
Michael Petroni (Writer/Director, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Rite) and Jamie Hilton (Producer, The Waiting City, Sleeping Beauty) of See Pictures will come together to discuss how they develop original and engaging Australian productions for the international marketplace.

FanDependent’s Thomas Mai and Hattie Archibald will explore the importance of using social media to finance, market & distribute film content.
“We believe audience is king. No matter how much blood, sweat and tears a filmmaker invests into a film, it is the audience that determines the life of a film. Now more than ever, filmmakers need to be fandependent not independent” Mai says.

The brain behind Gotye’s music video for Somebody I Used to Know, Natasha Pincus, will focus on filmmaking for the music industry. Pincus says “Making a music video means you have to work within an entirely new world. The speak is different, the stakes are different, and sometimes the tastes are different.”

Two filmmakers with firsthand experience on effective collaboration are Erica Harrison (Writer) and Simon Rippingale (Animator/Director). The pair will discuss how they collaborated on the animation A Cautionary Tail, which featured voice-overs from the likes of Cate Blanchett and David Wenham.
In a practical session, Cutting Edge will delve into post-production. Exploring how the different specialties work together, this demonstration will show the importance of visual effects in telling a story on screen.

Tropfest Founder and Director, John Polson, will also present on the day. John has achieved notable success as a film and television director in the US, most recently directing episodes of the hit television show Elementary.

“Last year’s Roughcut was a huge success. There seems to be a real need for this kind of event – where industry professionals can share their advice with emerging filmmakers in an intimate forum” Polson says. “This year again we’re bringing together some incredible talent – all of whom have significantly contributed to the Australian film community”.

Nikon will also run a hands-on workshop using their new range of DSLR cameras and in the collaborative spirit will also host networking drinks at the events conclusion.
