Director set for LEGO Movie sequel

Chris McKay will direct the sequel to The LEGO Movie, the 3D animated blockbuster which has raked in $US362 million at cinemas worldwide.

McKay was animation co-director on the first film, which was co-produced by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, with animation by Animal Logic.

Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who co-scripted and directed The LEGO Movie, will produce the sequel. A treatment is being written by Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern (Wreck-it Ralph, Mr. Popper's Penguins), according to Deadline.com.

Warner Bros. is also considering a spin-off that will broaden the LEGO franchise by building on the world of Ninjago, modern cities and ancient villages populated by dragons.

McKay directed 39 episodes of Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken and the telemovie Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III.

Warner Bros. has dated the sequel for May 2017. Roadshow launches The LEGO Movie on April 3. Chris Pratt voices Emmet, a LEGO minifigure mistakenly identified as the key to saving the world,  with Will Ferrell as a CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with managing his own life.
