More antics for A Few Best Men

Screenwriter Dean Craig will make his directing debut on the sequel to slapstick comedy A Few Best Men.

ScreenWest and Arclight Films are co-funding development of the project and it’s due to shoot in Western Australia next year.

The producers are Tania Chambers, Laurence Malkin, Share Stallings and Arclight’s Gary Hamilton. Craig said the sequel will take the characters from the original in a “very new and exciting direction that I think will be totally surprising and extremely funny.”

Stephan Elliott directed the original, scripted by Craig, the tale of a groom and his three best men who travel from England to Australia for a wedding, where mayhem ensues. It starred Laura Brent, Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall and Kevin Bishop.

The comedy grossed $5.3 million in Australia out of a worldwide total of $US14 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Italy and Spain were the top grossing international markets.

This will be the second collaboration between Malkin, Stallings and Perth-based Chambers, who have just wrapped principal photography on Kriv Stenders’ thriller Kill Me Three Times, which stars Simon Pegg, Sullivan Stapleton, Alice Braga, Teresa Palmer, Luke Hemsworth, Callan Mulvey and Bryan Brown.

Cargo Entertainment is selling the thriller internationally, Hopscotch eOne is the Australasian distributor and WME is the North American rep.

Arclight Films is handling international sales for the sequel and will introduce the film to buyers when the script is completed early next year.
