Perth Film Festival to screen two award winning Asia Pacific Films

Press release

Perth Festival is thrilled to announce the screening of two award-winning films Thy Womb and The Mirror Never Lies from the 2012 Sixth Annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), as Lotterywest Festival Films brings the ‘Asian Oscars’ to Perth.

Perth audiences will have the opportunity to see the Filipino film Thy Womb, awarded Best Director and Best Actress, and the Indonesian film The Mirror Never Lies, awarded Best Children’s Feature Film, over two exclusive Monday night screenings at Joondalup Pines on January 21 and 28.

Perth Festival is excited to support the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the region’s highest accolade in film. The APSA celebrate the cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the vast Asia Pacific region, which produces half the world’s film.

APSA Artistic Director Maxine Williamson said: “I am thrilled to see two 2012 APSA winning films participating at Perth Festival. Those fortunate to see both films will learn much of the beautiful people who live their lives from and by the sea.”

Perth Festival Film Program Manager Madeline Bates said: “I’m delighted that Perth Festival is an official Screening partner of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and to be able to bring to Perth audiences two award-winning films that bring to life two fascinating areas of the world not often seen in Perth cinemas.”

Earning a four-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival, Thy Womb is an intimate and poignant story by Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza, the first and only Filipino to have won at Cannes (Kinatay, 2009), about a midwife (played by Filipino screen idol Nora Aunor) living in a tiny, remote island community of sea gypsy people – The Bajau of Tawi-Tawi. Herself infertile, she makes the ultimate sacrifice to give her husband a child of his own.

Thy Womb will be exclusively screening on Monday 21 January and The Mirror Never Lies will be screening on Monday 28 January.
