Sydney event to honour Greg Coote

The life and career of film and TV industry executive and producer Greg Coote will be celebrated in Sydney on July 20.

A pioneer of the Australian film renaissance of the 1970s and 80s and a former joint CEO of Village Roadshow, Coote died at his home in Los Angeles on June 27. He was 72.

His family, Village Roadshow colleagues and industry friends will gather to celebrate and share stories of his life, his achievements and his generosity.

The venue will be the Village Roadshow offices, level 4, 235 Pyrmont St, Pyrmont NSW. The time: 4 – 7pm.

Tributes have continued to pour in for the former head of Village Roadshow Pictures and Dune Entertainment since IF’s obituary.

Typifying the universal respect and admiration for the man. Ausfilm’s former rep in Los Angeles and current Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira said, "Greg was a mentor to me. He championed my getting the role at Ausfilm and really lobbied hard as he believed I was the right candidate. He has nurtured my career and was in fact the first person outside of my family I told when I secured the role at Screen Queensland.

“I will miss him deeply and cannot imagine Los Angeles without him there. He was always open, caring and happy to share his knowledge, contacts and open doors for me. To say he will be missed simply doesn't say enough.”

LA-based filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith posted on Facebook, “He was a pioneering force in the Australian film industry renaissance in the 1970s. He helped green light three of my early films in that period and remained a friend and supporter ever since. “
