Arte France acquires First Australians

[Tue 09/02/2010 11:33:52]

Press release from SBS

French public broadcaster Arte France has purchased the acclaimed documentary, produced by two of Australia’s finest indigenous filmmakers, Rachel Perkins and Darren Dale.

Six years in the making and filmed in HD, First Australians tells the story of what happens when the world’s oldest living culture is overrun by the world’s greatest empire.

First Australians has enjoyed continued sales success both locally and internationally. The series can now be seen in major territories including New Zealand, Finland, Canada, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Asia.

It has also enjoyed critical success locally, most recently winning the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Documentary.

SBS National Manager, Content Sales and Distribution, Sharon Ramsay-Luck said: “Arte France prides itself on being one of the premiere cultural broadcasters in Europe, so this is an exciting sale for SBS Content Sales. The purchase by such a prestigious channel is a great recognition for a wonderful documentary.”

SBS Content Sales Manager Kristin Burgham said: “We are really proud to be working with Arte France on the sale of First Australians. It is a blue-chip title in SBS’s catalogue and we look forward to further sales of this level internationally.”
