Wog Boy 2 passes $3.3m

[Mon 31/05/2010 04:40:19]

By Brendan Swift

The Kings of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2 has passed the $3.3 million mark in its second weeked at the box office, becoming the second highest grossing local film of the year.

The comedy posted a 41 per cent drop at the box office, taking just under $1.08 million in its second weekend across 202 screens. Its screen average stands at a healthy $5336.

The original Wog Boy grossed almost $11.5 million a decade ago. The sequel, produced by See Saw Films and distributed by Paramount, takes Steve Karamitsis (Nick Giannopoulos) and Frank (Vince Colosimo) from Melbourne to the Greek island of Mykonos in order to reclaim a family inheritance.

It was the third highest ranked film of the weekend behind Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which grossed more than $3.48 million in its opening weekend across 299 screens and Robin Hood, which took $2.23 million in its third weekend. The Russell Crowe film has now grossed $14.42 million in Australia.

Meanwhile, local comedy I Love You Too and war film Beneath Hill 60 both appear to be near the end of their run in cinemas taking $64,227 and $47,795 respectively.

Crime thriller Animal Kingdom grossed more than $115,000 in preview screening ahead of its release this Thursday.
