There is a good chance that Truth, a US drama starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, will shoot in Australia.
Redford is attached to play former CBS News anchor Dan Rather with Blanchett as his producer Mary Mapes.
The plot follows the scandal that ensued after Rather reported on 60 Minutes that George W. Bush’s father arranged for him to serve in the National Guard to avoid the Vietnam War draft.
As a result CBS launched an investigation into whether the documents quoted in the story were forgeries, Mapes was fired for so-called lapses in judgment, and Rather’s reputation was tarnished.
The film will mark the directing debut of James Vanderbilt, the screenwriter who wrote the first two installments of The Amazing Spider-Man, White House Down and Zodiac.
Vanderbilt is adapting Mapes’ 2005 memoir Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power.
Deadline.com reported that shooting is due to start in the northern fall, meaning in the next few months. Blanchett’s preference is to make the film in Australia so she can be close to her family, and the producers are looking into shooting here, IF understands. Most of the film is set in interiors in Washington and New York.
The producers are Vanderbilt, Brad Fischer, his partner in Mythology Entertainment, William Sherak and Mikkel Bondesen.
