Warner Bros’ King Kong reboot, Kong: Skull Island, has stomped its box office competition, debuting on $4.7 million from 401 screens; an average of $11,759.

The film, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and partly shot on the Gold Coast, just pipped last week’s number one, Fox’s Logan. The Hugh Jackman blockbuster took $4.5 million, and now sits on a total of $14.9 million after two weeks.

Fellow Fox title Hidden Figures, now in its fourth week, rang up $1.3 million – a drop of only 27 per cent. It now sits on $13.7 million overall.

No other film cracked the million dollar mark this week. However, Lion’s takings of $671,227 pushed its cume to $27.7 million. The Transmission film is now the sixth highest grossing Australian film of all time, and needs only a paltry $5,000 or so to overtake Moulin Rouge and squeeze into the top five.

Behind Lion was another Aussie title, Madman’s Jasper Jones, which took $395,645. Now in its second week, Rachel Perkins’ film has made $1.5 million overall.

After five weeks in release, Universal’s Fifty Shades Darker brought in $300,645, boosting its cume to $17.7 million.

Despite being out for seven weeks, Best Picture winner Moonlight has cracked the top ten for the first time, with weekend takings of $285,213. The Roadshow film has now grossed $794,241 so far.  Madman’s Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, a Japanese anime, took $265,001 from only 40 screens – an impressive average of $6,625.

Narrowly behind was Roadshow’s Before I Fall, which took $264,320, taking its cume to $794,241 after two weeks.

Rounding out the top ten was Universal’s The Great Wall, which fell 62 per cent to take $234,625. The US-China co-pro now sits on $7.1 million.

StudioCanal’s A Few Less Men debuted on $92,350 from 96 screens, while Transmission’s David Stratton: a Cinematic Life bowed on 20 screens to take $18,535.
