Some 50 web series from 17 different countries are set to screen at this year’s Melbourne WebFest.

Among the Aussie series selected are comedies such as Bruce, Little Acorns and Girt by Fear, and the international Emmy award winning animation Doodles. Drama series that have also crossed over to television, like Starting From Now (season 5), Restoration and High Life will also be showcased.

Festival director Steinar Ellingsen said the selection process had been the most competitive to date.

“Our panel has worked hard to strike a balance between funded and independently produced projects,” he said.

“Some incredibly difficult decisions have been made, but the result is an official selection of exceptional quality, featuring the most ambitious projects we’ve screened to date.”

Like last year, Melbourne Webfest will also partner with ABC iview to hold a live pitching competition, with the winner earning $5,000 towards script development. The prize is intended to cover a trip to Marsielle WebFest to attend its annual screenwriting residency.

This year’s festival will also feature an industry development day that will include masterclasses on screenwriting, digital engagement and resilence.

Melbourne WebFest runs June 29 – July 2.
