Elizabeth Debicki has joined Columbia Pictures' Peter Rabbit, the new live-action/CG motion film based on the series of books written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter.

The film will be directed by Will Gluck (Easy A) and begin production at Sydney's Animal Logic in January.

Gluck and Animal Logic CEO Zareh Nalbandian will produce the feature, with Doug Belgrad serving as executive producer. Jodi Hildebrand and Jason Lust will also serve as EPs.

The screenplay is by Rob Lieber (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Bay) with revisions by Gluck.

James Corden is voicing the lead role of Peter, and Rose Byrne will star in the live-action female lead role of Bea. Debicki and Star Wars' Daisy Ridley are also voicing characters.

Byrne will start work on the film straight from her turn on stage at the Sydney Theatre Company's production of David Mamet's Speed the Plow.

“This announcement is the culmination of two years of development at Animal Logic Entertainment, Olive Bridge Entertainment and Columbia Pictures," said Nalbandian. "It has been a great journey bringing Peter Rabbit, his family and many friends to the screen."

Screen Australia and Screen NSW are supporting in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation. Lauren Abrahams will oversee the project for the studio.

Over 600 specialised craft, live action visual FX crew and support staff will be employed to work on the film, according to a statement. The film is slated for an April 2018 release.
