Foxtel commissions new drama series

[Thu 16/04/2009 06:03:57]

Press release from Foxtel

FOXTEL today announced pre-production is underway on an escapist and romantic new Australian drama, Spirited, from the creators of the breakthrough subscription television series Love My Way.

Starring AFI, TV WEEK Logie and ASTRA Award winner Claudia Karvan, the eight-part series will premiere on the W channel in early 2010.

In Spirited, producers John Edwards, Jacquelin Perske and Karvan pose the question “What if you don’t meet the love of your life until you are dead?”

A blackly funny exploration of love, death and life, Spirited tells the story of Suzy Darling and Henry Mallet.

Karvan will play Suzy, a dentist who has moved so single-mindedly through life that she hasn’t stopped to smell the roses. And then along comes Henry Mallet - the ghost of an ‘80s English rock star.

FOXTEL Executive Director of Television and Marketing Brian Walsh said: “I am very pleased to welcome Claudia, John and Jacquelin back to FOXTEL after the phenomenal success we shared in bringing Love My Way to subscription television audiences.

“Spirited is an intriguing concept and, with this team at the helm, the series promises to be an engaging property for the W channel as we build on its reputation as a destination for quality drama.”

Karvan said: “Following the success of Love My Way, John, Jacquelin and I are looking forward to re-visiting the full-bodied FOXTEL experience.

“They provide a great working environment for us and the critical and creative support is so valuable. We can't wait to get started on this curiously fun, Spirited world."

Edwards and Karvan first worked together on The Secret Life of Us then together with Perske they created and produced Love My Way.

Spirited is based on an original idea of Perske’s which she and Karvan are developing into the series that they are co-producing with Edwards.

The series will be directed by Stuart McDonald (Summer Heights High and AFI Award winner for Stranded) and Jessica Hobbs (AFI Award winner for Love My Way and Answered by Fire).

Spirited will start shooting in Sydney in October with Kim Vecera as executive producer for FOXTEL.
