SBS launches World News Australia iPad app on the back of iPhone success

Press release from SBS

SBS’s World News Australia iPad app has launched at number one on iTunes following the overwhelming success of its iPhone app.

The free World News Australia iPhone app, developed in partnership with TigerSpike, launched in May and has achieved more than 105,000 downloads through iTunes and a four out of five stars rating. Set for success, the iPad app debuted as ‘App of the Week’ this week on iTunes, following in the footsteps of the iPhone app, which also debuted as ‘App of the Week’ following its launch.

Complementing both the World News Australia website and iPhone app, the iPad app features a high level of interactivity, allowing users to comment on articles and easily share their favourite stories via social media.

David Braithwaite, executive producer of online news and current affairs at SBS said: “The iPhone app was a huge success, launching as the number one free news app and reaching the ‘top 20 free apps’ list, so we are very excited to be launching the World News Australia app for the iPad.

“The development of the iPad app is just another example of SBS integrating content across channels and platforms, ensuring our users and viewers can access SBS programming when, where and how they want it.”

Chris Watt, Product Director at TigerSpike said: “TigerSpike is delighted to have worked with SBS on extending its content offering to mobile and tablet devices. The personal media space not only enables SBS to deliver rich and engaging content experiences, it also allows SBS to reach more people with its content.”

SBS World News Australia is also investigating the development of an app for the Android platform.
