Screen Aus backs 11 new projects

By Sam Dallas

Screen Australia has thrown its financial support behind 11 new projects – including two new feature films and three Underbelly telemovies – that will trigger production worth more than $42 million.

The latest cash injection of almost $8 million will go towards feature films A Few Best Men, directed by Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) and written by Dean Craig (Death At A Funeral), and Wasted on the Young, written/directed by debutant Ben C Lucas.

Three Underbelly TV movies got given the green light, which will look at Australia’s most successful armed robber Russell ‘Mad Dog’ Cox, Victorian policeman Colin McLaren’s infiltration of the Calabrian Mafia and the Silk and Miller murders and the Lorimer Taskforce.

Funding has also been given to three TV drama series’ and five documentaries.

“It is very exciting to invest in both a new film from an internationally successful comedy team and a project from an exciting new filmmaking talent,” Screen Australia chief executive Ruth Harley said.

A Few Best Men is a very Australian take on the classic fish out of water tale led by a highly talented comedic team with a strong track record.

Wasted on the Young showcases genuine new filmmaking talent and uniformly impressive performances from a virtually unknown young cast to create an emotionally sophisticated and resonant, contemporary thriller.”
