Tomorrow, When The War Began: biggest Aussie movie of 2010

By Sam Dallas

Stuart Beattie blockbuster Tomorrow, When The War Began has crept past Bran Nue Dae to become this year’s biggest Aussie movie at the local box office.

After two weeks, the muchly anticipated, action-packed film has raked in $7,734,813 nation-wide, $NZ840,000 in New Zealand and $36,354 from preview sales Down Under.

The $27 million (est) film, produced by Omnilab Media's production arm Ambience Entertainment, tells the tale of a group of teenagers who go on a camping trip, only to return home and find their country has been invaded by an unknown army.

Paramount Pictures Australia managing director and Australia/New Zealand vice president Mike Selwyn said in a statement he was looking forward to the upcoming school holiday period and hoped the dollars made would pave way for the rumoured sequels.

Based on the novel by John Marsden, the blockbuster was screened to foreign buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival and Omnilab Media’s managing director Christopher Mapp said an announcement would be made soon.

As reported earlier this week by INSIDEFILM, last weekend’s tally of $2.7 million was a 46 per cent drop on its opening weekend.

Bran Nue Dae, which has made $US28,558 since opening on September 10 in the US, made $7,637,358 at the local box office earlier this year.
