Toy Story 3 cracks $30m

By Brendan Swift

Animated feature Toy Story 3 has cracked the $30 million mark at the box office in just its third weekend at cinemas.

It marks Disney's second major hit this year after Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland took $37.56 million. Only one Disney film passed the $20 million mark the previous year – the animated feature UP, which took just under $28 million.

Toy Story 3's $6.36 million box office gross on the weekend was just 1 per cent lower than the previous week. The film was shown across 469 screens, pushing its screen average to $13,563. It has now grossed $30.29 million in total.

Meanwhile, the Hoyts-distributed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse posted a 58 per cent drop in its second week after taking almost $5.4 million across 533 screens. It has now grossed $23.15 million.

Sony's remake of The Karate Kid took $3.69 million in its opening weekend across 241 screens to post the strongest screen average of $15,297. Including previews, it has taken almost $6.75 million.

Among Australian films, crime drama Animal Kingdom continues to perform strongly, adding $250,185 in its sixth week. That amount, posted across 66 screens, represented a 21 per cent drop.

Adoption drama The Waiting City, which stars Joel Edgerton and Radha Mitchell, opened with $31,991 in preview screenings ahead of its release this Thursday.
