Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean to executive produce sci-fi thriller Crawlspace

Wolf Creek director Greg McLean has jumped on board a new sci-fi action thriller that has commenced filming in Melbourne.

Crawlspace, the directorial debut of award-winning SFX make-up studio Wicked of Oz principal Justin Dix, follows a squad of elite soldiers set to infiltrate and extract the lead science team from Australia’s top secret underground military compound after it comes under attack from unknown forces.

They then discover that all is not as it seems and something far more sinister is going on.

Crawlspace is a very exciting and ambitious project that I am thrilled to be involved in,” McLean said in a statement.

“Justin Dix is a promising new filmmaker, and, true to the science fiction/thriller genre, he has created a nail-biting script with plenty of scope for the actors and special effects team.”

Produced by Dix, John Finemore and Nicolas Sherry (with Steve Topic as a co-producer) the Wicked of Oz/Maker Films/Wolf Creek Pictures flick stars local actors led by Ditch Davey (Underbelly Files, Blessed, Blue Heelers) and Amber Clayton (Rush, Three Rivers).

McLean, James Hoppe (Summer Coda, Shadow Play, Blind Company), Craig McMahon (Red Hill), Pete Ford (Storm Warning), Silvio Salom and Stephen Wools are executive producers on the film.

Finemore said the film was a "thrilling combination of non-stop action with a smart sophisticated sci-fi story that we simply don't see enough of in this country".

Another sci-fi action thriller Popbot will be shot in Melbourne later this year, while crime thriller John Doe starts production in Melbourne next month.

Filming will take place at Docklands Studios Melbourne throughout April and May.
