AFI presents commemorative stamps artwork

In conjunction with the AFI Award’s 50th Anniversary, Australia Post and the Australian Film Institute in July this year invited the public to choose the five greatest Australian films of all time, which will be issued in a series of commemorative stamps.

The online poll results were released mid-October revealing the country’s top five films in no particular order as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The Castle, Muriel’s Wedding, Lantana and Gallipoli.

During the announcement of the AFI Award nominees this afternoon, actor Vince Colosimo and awards night host Stephen Curry presented to the audience the commemorative stamps’ artwork.

Colosimo in jest, poked fun at Curry who appeared in The Castle, for being immortalised on a stamp despite not receiving an AFI nomination this year. (Curry was a 2007 AFI Best Lead Actor in Television Drama winner in The King.) Colosimo himself was nominated this year for an AFI Award for Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama for his role in Underbelly.

The stamps feature the poster artwork of the five films and will be issued for sale by Australia Post on November 3.

Out of these five films, one winner with the highest number of votes will be announced as Australia’s favourite film of all time at the L’Oréal Paris 2008 AFI Awards on December 6.
