Animal Kingdom passes $3m mark

The award-winning crime drama ANIMAL KINGDOM has reached the $3,160,736 mark since opening on the 3rd June and continues to generate strong box office figures.

The film maintained healthy box office results as it entered its 4th week, with only a 20% drop on the previous week. Since opening, screens have increased from 48 to currently 77 around Australia.

This makes ANIMAL KINGDOM, so far, the fourth most successful Australian box office film this year sitting just behind Jeremy Hartley Sims' WW1 feature Beneath Hill 60, which opened on 231 screens and has taken a box office of $3,172,243 after 10 weeks. Nick Giannopoulos' The Kings Of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2 is currently on $4,796,714 and opened on 203 screens and the musical comedy Bran Nue Dae, opened on 164 screens, has a final box office totalling an impressive $7,565,476, proving that 2010 has so far been a very positive year for Australian film and all Australian movie-goer tastes.

ANIMAL KINGDOM has been critically acclaimed across the board with review website „Rotten Tomatoes' rating it 100% fresh! The facebook page has attracted over 9000 fans from around the globe and glowing references have been made about the film from celebrity „Twitterers such as UK acting legend Sir Ian McKellan who twittered “Saw Australia‟s hit movie, direct from Sundance “Animal Kingdom” about a crazed criminal family in Melbourne. On screen they are rivetingly nasty, especially the matriarch of the gang, played to perfection by Jacki Weaver. I'm awfully glad not to have met any of them in person when we were there last month.”

Director, David Michôd, producer Liz Watts, Jacki Weaver, Sullivan Stapleton and James Frecheville all attended the LA Film Festival Gala Screening on Wednesday 23rd June completing a week of media tours in New York and Los Angeles for the upcoming US release on August 13. The reaction to the screening on Wednesday from the 800 seater sold out audience was overwhelmingly positive. Guests at the screening and after party on Wednesday included Ewan McGregor, Curtis Hanson, Stephan Elliott, Luke Davies, Emma Lung, Kick Curry, David Lyons, Nash Edgerton as well as the film‟s US distributor, Tom Bernard Co-President of Sony Pictures Classics.

The film has been sold to international markets including US and Latin American markets (Sony Pictures Classic), United Kingdom (Optimum Releasing), France (ARP Selection) Italy (Mikado Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox Entertainment), Benelux (Paradiso), Spain (Avalon), Germany (Atlas) and Commonwealth of Independent States, former Russia (Film Depot).
